Rail Transport China to Europe
Rail transport China to Europe is one of the most efficient freight options. Many European companies are looking for reliable freight options and have turned to Senghor Logistics, hoping to get a comprehensive range of services designed to meet the needs of these businesses looking to utilize this rapidly growing logistics solution.
Why Choose Rail Transport from China to Europe?
Rail freight has become increasingly popular thanks to the development of the China–Europe Railway Express network. This logistics corridor connects major Chinese manufacturing hubs with key European distribution centers.
Compared with other shipping methods from China to Europe:
| Shipping Method | Transit Time | Cost Level | Best For |
| Air Freight | 3 to 8 days | Highest | Urgent shipments |
| Rail Freight | 12 to 22 days | Medium | Balanced speed & cost |
| Sea Freight | 20 to 45 days | Lowest | Large volume cargo |
Most trains follow the Northern Corridor.
Route: China (e.g., Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou) -> Kazakhstan -> Russia -> Belarus -> Poland (Malaszewicze) -> Europe (Germany, France, Netherlands, etc.).
Average Transit Times to Major Hubs:
- Duisburg (Germany): 16 to 18 Days
- Hamburg (Germany): 18 to 20 Days
- Malaszewicze (Poland): 12 to 14 Days
- Lodz (Poland): 14 to 16 Days
- Budapest (Hungary): 18 to 20 Days

Rail transport offers several advantages:
- Faster than ocean shipping, and more economical than air freight.
- Stable transit schedules, and almost unaffected by the weather, operate accurately and regularly throughout the year.
- Costs and carbon emissions are lower. Its transport costs are lower than those of trucks, and its fuel consumption is one-twentieth that of trucks.
- Cross-border infrastructure is reliable and secure, with far less risk than sea freight.
Also, there are disadvantages:
- Limited routes and destinations: Rail transport primarily operates between major logistics hubs. Goods may still need to be transported by truck to reach their final destination.
- Container transshipment during gauge changes: Some countries use different rail gauges, meaning that at certain border crossings, containers must be transshipped, or trains must have their bogies changed.
- Capacity limitations during peak seasons: During busy shipping periods, railway space can become limited due to high demand.
- Limited capacity during peak seasons: During peak freight seasons, rail capacity can become strained due to high demand. For example, after the Red Sea crisis, ships from Asia to Europe needed to detour around the Cape of Good Hope, and some European customers opted for rail transport from China to Europe, leading to capacity constraints.
Despite these disadvantages, rail transport from China to Europe remains a popular logistics option because it provides a good balance between speed, cost, and reliability for many types of international cargo.

Services We Provide
Door-to-door service
We handle everything – pickup from supplier factory in China, export customs clearance, rail transport across Eurasia, import customs clearance in Europe, final delivery to warehouse or business address. You don't need to handle transshipment or logistics coordination yourself.
Full Container Load (FCL) Rail Freight
For large shipments, we provide FCL rail transport using standard containers: 20ft containers and 40ft containers.
(Please note: FCL rail transport requires at least one 40-foot container. If you only have one 20-foot container, you will need to wait for another 20-foot container to be consolidated, which will take some time. Please contact us for your inquiry.)
Cargo is loaded at origin in China and transported directly to European rail terminals.
Typical routes include:
- Chongqing to Duisburg
- Xi' an to Hamburg
- Zhengzhou to Warsaw
- Yiwu to Madrid…

Less-than-Container Load (LCL) Rail Freight
If your cargo volume is small, our LCL rail freight service allows multiple shipments to share container space.
Benefits include:
- Lower shipping cost
- Flexible cargo volume
- Regular weekly departures
- Professional cargo consolidation
Our warehouse teams consolidate cargo from multiple customers before loading into rail containers.

FAQ
Q1: Does rail transport cover all European countries?
A: We cover all countries with China-Europe Railway Express, serving major hub cities such as Duisburg, Hamburg, Warsaw, and Madrid, and providing last-mile connections to smaller cities. Please provide specific addresses for inquiries.
Q2: How many containers can a China-Europe Railway Express train carry?
A: China-Europe Railway Express trains are generally composed of 41 containers. The entire journey of the China-Europe freight train is divided into three segments: the domestic segment in China + the CIS countries + Europe. The locomotive traction, railway axle load, and transshipment capacity of these three regions are completely different, so the most compatible train formation number for each region must be considered. Among them, the shortest train formation is in Germany, at only 650 meters, which can pull 41 40-foot containers.
Q3: What are the maximum weight and size restrictions for rail transport?
A: Maximum weight and size restrictions depend on the type of container used. The weight of a 20GP container plus cargo must not exceed 30 tons, and the weight difference between two pairs of 20GP containers must not exceed 5 tons. The weight of a 40HQ container plus cargo must not exceed 30 tons.
Please consult our team for specific requirements.
Q4: Are there seasonal delays?
A: Minimal delays. Railway transport operates year-round, but winter weather in Central Asia/Russia may cause delays of 1-2 days. Extreme snow and ice weather in Europe can also cause delays. We will proactively update customers with transportation information.
Q5: What if there are delays at the China-Kazakhstan border? I've heard it's a bottleneck.
A: You're right. The Khorgos/Altenkol border crossing is the busiest point on this route because trains have to undergo a "gauge conversion."
Chinese trains use standard gauge, while Kazakhstan uses the wider Russian gauge. This means that each container must be lifted from one train to another by a giant crane. It's a massive logistics operation.
Sometimes, queues can occur due to bad weather, a surge in freight volume, or customs inspections.
We monitor queue times daily. We can sometimes arrange for your goods to be transported through other border crossings (such as Erenhot/Zamyn-Uud) to avoid the longest queue times; alternatively, we recommend adding a 2-3 day buffer to your supply chain plan during peak periods.
