Warehousing is the activity of storing and preserving goods and items in warehouses, encompassing two components: "warehouse" (the buildings and sites for storing goods) and "storage" (receiving and storing goods for future use).
Traditional warehousing mainly involves the receipt, storage, and issuance of materials. Modern warehousing adds processing and sorting processes, forming a comprehensive system of logistics, information flow, and documentation flow. Based on technology, it can be classified into specialized warehouses, general-purpose warehouses, and dangerous goods warehouses (the latter using independent areas or dedicated warehouses according to the "Regulations on Temporary Storage Management of Dangerous Goods for Air Transport"). Based on function, it can be categorized into personal warehouses, transit warehouses, etc. Warehouse management covers the storage, classification, and inbound/outbound processes of goods, requiring information technology such as WMS warehouse management systems, RFID technology, and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) for inventory control. Modern warehousing facilities are developing towards green, digital, and intelligent technologies.
